Hair Has No Gender
Blackpool salon, John Anthoney Hair gets rid of gender-specific pricing as ‘we feel that hair has no gender’
A hair salon in the North West has got rid of gender-specific pricing in a bid to become more inclusive. John Anthoney Hair in Blackpool will instead charge people based on the length of their hair and time needed to create the desired look when they reopen.
This will see a ‘more fair and transparent pricing structure’ being offered to all clients.
Generally, unisex hair salons traditionally charge their gents less than their females – where is the gender equality with that? “We want to take away the gender stereotypes when people are booking appointments because, at the end of the day, it’s all hair and we feel that hair has no gender.
“What we’ve decided to do is break our price list down into different categories – clipper cut, short-short, above and below shoulder.”
This change will mean that both men and women who have the same length of hair will be charged the same price for a haircut.
“Throughout lockdown I’ve been able to sit down and think about ways to make the salon more inclusive and a safe space for everyone. I work closely with global colour brand Matrix as part of their education team and recently they rebranded with a new vision, everyone is welcome, all hair types, all humans and got me thinking how can we become more inclusive. A person who identifies as non-binary will now be able to book for a haircut without assigning a gender to themselves. I have owned the business for over 13 years, and I plan to introduce the new pricing structure once lockdown restrictions ease and the salon can reopen on 12th April.”
